What does a successful student look like?  What do those students do that is different from others? Success in school can be measured by grades, awards, or standardized tests, but the traits they posses are assets that they can carry further than any report card or trophy.  So what are those traits?  an early appreciation for reading is one of the characteristics that successful students have.  That can mean that they enjoy an adult reading to them or simply being exposed to books at an early age.  interpersonal skills is a highly valued trait, not only in an education setting, but also in the business world as well.  If a child can share, cooperate, or comfort those in distress, that will guide students through a huge hurdle that many other kids find hard to climb.  As a parent or a teacher these skills that are easily encouraged by conversing about them and in some cases even demonstrated.  self-regulation for children refers to the ability to control one’s own behaviors with the support of adults especially in stressful situations.  The most important consideration for an adult to help a child develop self-regulation is to closely monitor their own reactions during stressful times.  Kids will take cues from the adults around them to form their own reactions. Plainly put, if mom acts anxious during a stressful time a child will most-often react the same way.
